Paramount is poised to drop its support of HD DVD after Warner Brothers’ recent backing of Sony's Blu-ray technology, in a move that will sound the death knell of HD DVD and bring the home entertainment format war to a definitive end. Paramount and DreamWorks Animation, which makes the Shrek films, came out in support of HD DVD last summer, joining General Electric’s Universal Studios as the main backers of the Toshiba format.

Tokio (rts). Im Kampf um das DVD-Format der Zukunft steht der japanische Elektronikkonzern Toshiba offenbar kurz vor der Aufgabe. Toshiba habe die Planungen für einen Ausstieg aus dem Geschäft mit seinen HD-DVD-Geräten fast abgeschlossen, verlautete am Wochenende aus Unternehmenskreisen. Damit würde sich Toshiba nach einem jahrelangen Kampf um die Vorherrschaft im DVD-Geschäft seinem Erzrivalen Sony geschlagen geben, dessen konkurrierende Blu-Ray-Technologie jüngst immer mehr Anhänger fand.
Zuletzt hatten sich die US-Elektronikkette Best Buy und der weltgrößte Einzelhändler Wal-Mart ins Blu-Ray-Lager geschlagen. Der staatliche japanische Rundfunk NHK hatte zuvor berichtet, der geplante Produktionsstopp von HD-DVD-Spielern werde bei Toshiba zu Verlusten von umgerechnet Hunderten Millionen Euro führen. Toshiba wolle aber zunächst weiterhin HD-DVD-Geräte in Verbrauchermärkten anbieten. In die Entwicklung neuer Geräte wolle das japanische Elektronikunternehmen aber nicht mehr investieren. Bei Toshiba war zunächst niemand für eine offizielle Stellungnahme zu erreichen.
Wal-Mart begründete seine Entscheidung gegen Toshibas HD-DVD-Geräte mit den Wünschen der Kunden. Das Toshiba-Format werde schrittweise aus den Regalen genommen, teilte Wal-Mart mit. Auch große Hollywood-Studios wie 20th Century Fox von News Corp, Walt Disney sowie Warner Bros von Time Warner hatten sich bereits hinter die Blu-Ray-Technologie gestellt. Im Januar hatte auch der deutsche Filmverleih Constantin angekündigt, von März an nur noch im Blu-Ray-Format zu veröffentlichen. Die beiden Formate unterscheiden sich äußerlich nicht von einer CD, können aber große Mengen Daten speichern und liefern hochauflösende Videobilder.

Offiziell: Toshiba verkündet das Ende der HD DVD - Blu-ray Disc gewinnt

Toshiba hat soeben in Japan offiziell das Aus für die HD DVD angekündigt. Die Auslieferung der HD DVD-Player soll reduziert und bis zum Ende März der Verkauf eingestellt werden. Auch die Produktion von HD DVD-Laufwerken für den PC soll beendet werden. Noch offen bleibt, ob auch weiterhin Notebooks mit integriertem HD DVD-Laufwerk angeboten werden. Für alle Besitzer von HD DVD-Playern soll es auch weiterhin Support geben, womit weitere Software-Updates für die Player nicht ausgeschlossen sind. Ob Toshiba jetzt die Blu-ray Disc unterstützen wird, ist aktuell noch offen. Weiterhin produziert werden sollen DVD-Player und DVD-Recorder.
Nach der Entscheidung von Toshiba dürfte es fraglich sein, ob der von Samsung bereits in den USA verkaufte Kombi-Player für Blu-ray Disc und HD DVD hierzulande noch auf den Markt kommt. Nachdem Microsoft noch gestern über die Zukunft des Xbox 360 HD DVD-Players keine Entscheidung fällen wollte, solange es keine offizielle Bestätigung seitens Toshiba gibt, dürfte es nicht lange dauern, bis das im Handel bereits zu reduzierten Preisen verkaufte Laufwerk von Microsoft aus dem Programm genommen wird.
Unausweichliche Konsequenzen wird die Entscheidung vor allem für die Studios Paramount und Universal haben, die bis zuletzt offiziell ausschließlich die HD DVD unterstützt hatten. Das Ende der HD DVD dürfte diese auch von ihren vertraglichen Verpflichtungen entbinden und somit den Weg für Blu-ray Disc-Veröffentlichungen frei machen.

TOKYO: Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.

“We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop,” said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. "While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”

Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.

Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.

This decision will not impact on Toshiba’s commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.

Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

schade, schade... die meisten von uns haben somit eine hd-dvd eines fantastischen konzerts im schrank, das wir aber nie anschauen können. ob EMI das konzert jemals auf blu-ray veröffentlichen wird? ich glaube kaum...

Vielleicht doch. Wenn abzusehen ist, das genug Leute nen Blu-Ray Player haben.
Ist doch nen nette Möglichkeit nochmal Geld einzunehmen....

Vielleicht kann man auch bald 'nen HD-Player für 5 € oder so erstehen, weil keiner sie mehr haben will?

Wer einen neuen Dvd Player kaufen möchte kann sich ja einen Toshiba HD EP 30 E KTE HD-DVD-Player (Upscaling 1080p, HDMI, Netzwerkanschluss) anschaffen. Den gibt es schon für ca. 150 Euronen.
Das ist ein toller Preis für diesen Dvd Player und schon kann man seine HD Scheibe von Herbert anschauen


Ich bin immer noch sehr begeistert von meinem HD Player und kaufe gerade billige HD dvd's auf

Toshiba Corporation announced today that the company has applied for membership of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and plans to introduce products that support the Blu-ray format. As a market leader in digital technologies, Toshiba provides a wide range of advanced digital products, such as DVD recorders and players, HDTVs and notebook PCs that support a wide range of storage devices, including hard disk drives (HDD), DVD, and SD Cards. In light of recent growth in digital devices supporting the Blu-ray format, combined with market demand from consumers and retailers alike, Toshiba has decided to join the BDA. Toshiba aims to introduce digital products that support the Blu-ray format, including BD players and notebook PCs integrating BD drives, in the course of this year. Details of the products, including the timing of regional launches, are now under consideration. We will make announcements in due course.
